Taking Amino Acids To Improve Muscle Growth

By Matt | Jan 10, 2008

Almost everyone knows you need protein to grow muscle, and protein powders are by far the most popular product used by athletes. But what about the building blocks of protein?

Amino acids are the structural building blocks of protein. They are found in almost all protein sources including meat, eggs, fish, cheese and protein supplements. When you ingest protein it’s broken down into single amino acids in the intestines and stomach. These single animos then bond to formed branched chained amino acids (BCAAs). These tiny branched chains are then small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream and into muscle tissue.

How amino acid supplements improve muscle growth.

After a training session your body is in a catabolic, protein deficient state. This means that your body cannot repair the muscle tissue fast enough using it’s own mechanisms. This is where aminos can help. BCAAs form their own metabolic path. Meaning the run parallel with your body’s own muscle building system. The difference is that the BCAA path is far superior in the delivery of nutrients and production of protein within muscle cells.

What does this mean for you? It means that muscles are repaired faster, more lean muscle is produced and less muscle is broken down after your training sessions.

How to make the most of aminos.

If you want to make the most of amino acids take them at staggered intervals throughout the day, including one dosage straight after you finish a training session. Preferably, your post-workout dosage would contain simple carbohydrates. Simple carbs help the body produce insulin which helps move nutients around the bloodstream more efficiently.
